Records of related Orange County, N.C., families, with genealogies of the Browning and Few families and copies of letters of the Holden and Lockhart families. Included are Civil War letters by Levi Young Lockhart and his brothers while serving in the 19th and 27th North Carolina Infantry regiments. The letters discuss food, clothing, sickness, casualties, and troop movements, particularly the fighting in Virginia near the end of the war. Many letters are written from Kinston following the Union capture of New Bern, N.C., in 1862. There is also correspondence, 1964-1968, between John A. Holden of La Place, La., and H.C. Browning concerning the Holden genealogy, including the parentage and activities of North Carolina governor William Woods Holden, and a number of Holden family wills.
